It serves the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and is the largest commercial airport in Virginia. With over 68 million passengers in 2017, PNS is the 20th busiest airport in the United States and the world's fourth busiest international gateway by passenger volume. The airport has two parallel runways, with a total length of 7,500 feet (2,286 m). In addition to its primary commercial operations, PNS is also a major general aviation facility and hosts significant military operations for nearby Naval Station Norfolk.
